So, out of all the things I could write about I found myself all twisted up over was the recent destruction of an art piece. There is an art exhibit at the Museum/Gallery in Colorado that a woman not only took a crowbar to the case but then tore it apart in protest that the piece depicted Jesus committing a lewd sexual act. Now, for those of you who are offended by this please stick with me. I promise there is a point.
What is art? In my eyes, art is anything that challenges your view on reality in a creative medium. Poetry, blog posts, paintings, video medium and everything in between can be art because they can take you out of yourself and challenge what you think it right. Do I understand that she was offended? Yes I do. However people are beginning to argue that the piece should not be in a museum which I believe is bullshit.
Point: The entire depiction is repugnant, slanderous to the morals a great deal of the community and the words attached to the art are not tasteful and it leaves a ‘foul taste in your mouth’
Counterpoint:
Slanderous to the morals of a great deal of the community? Then they don’t have to go and see it. Art is not to flatter your sensibilities. Art should be used to help you see things differently and sometimes that is by violently shaking up your perspective on things. If you can’t handle it, then stay away. Get over it.
Point: The fact that the museum is getting public grants means that this kind of art should not be allowed. “…Can art of any kind come into public facilities?”
Counterpoint: Yes. Because the moment the state begins to decide what art is and what art isn’t is the moment that censorship begins and art should not be censored
Point: It is at eye level for little kids!
Counterpoint: Then don’t bring your kids near it. Oh…it’s in comic book form and will draw them to it? Then BE AN ADULT AND GUIDE THEM AWAY FROM IT.
Point: What about Mohamed? What would happen if that was Mohamed?
Counterpoint: So, you really want to compare Islamic Extremists who would firebomb that Museum to those of us who like to pretend we are above that? It’s funny how they will condemn that kind of action right up until you say it’s unfair that we can’t act in that same way? I challenge you with this. If you use that argument again…get a Molotov and burn whatever it is you don’t agree or go right ahead and SHOOT THE PERSON WHO DOES IT…OR SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT IT! I thank that guy being interviewed for making the point that he would find it offensive regardless of who it is instead of feeding back into the Fox News Bullshit on that.
